Plucking Away at Humor

I always say, if you want to sneak up on someone, do it with a pizzicato - it's like tiptoeing with style. The opening of Pizzicato from my ballet 'Sylvia' is basically the musical equivalent of a cat burglar doing a soft-shoe shuffle on a velvet carpet.

Waltzing on the Light Side

I must confess, when I wrote the opening of Valse Lente, I was imagining a pair of elegant giraffes trying to waltz - all grace and a lot of confusion. It's like the music is saying, 'Take it slow, folks, one-two-three, one-two-whoops!'

Bacchus Brings the Party

I often joke that the opening of Cortège de Bacchus is what happens when you give a marching band a bit too much wine and tell them to keep in line. It's a grand, boisterous entrance that says, 'Bacchus is here, and he's brought the entire vineyard with him!'
